Tough First Day Back in the Office

Stosur out to Goerges; Joker, Tsonga need 3 sets

October 02, 2012 | 08:58 PM

If Joker, Murray, Ferrer and Tsonga tweeted each other after their wins today, their messages might have been, S**** to be Back!.

Joker saw the 2nd set breaker disappear 7-3 and was forced into a 3rd set with Michael Berrer, winning 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

Tsonga dropped his 1st set 4-6, and only held on to win courtesy of a breaker, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Murray won in two, but against Karlovic, that entailed a long breaker in the 1st set, which Andy won 9-7.

Ferrer, who played last week, returned to the office this week but only lasted 9 games before retiring, trailing 4-5 to Lu.

Other Men's results included:

In China,

- Lopez def. Harrison 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2

In Japan,

- Baghdatis def. Stakhovsky 7-6 (3) 7-5

Other seeds won without difficulty except for Wozniacki, who needed 3 sets to get by Hsieh Su-Wei, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-0.
