China Open a Big deal for WTA

Field, minus Serena, Jousts for $4.8 M

October 01, 2012 | 06:47 PM

In case you forgot (or never knew), The China Open is a rich event for the women, one of their 4 Premier Level tournaments of the year, with a total purse of $4.8 million dollars (Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid are the other 3 Premier events). While the top 4 women currently trail the top 4 men in YTD earnings by about 10%, this gap may be a little narrower after Beijing's purse is won.

The WTA event started out with #6 seed Errani retiring in her 1st set with an Italian qualifier in the first round. In the second round, #4 seed Kvitova continued her erratic ways, falling to Suarez-Navarro 6-3, 6-2. Her loss improves the odds that #8 seed Stosur or #9 Bartoli can add points they need for their Istanbul campaign.

Tomorrow, #7 see Na Li will face Petrova, whom she has not beaten in 6 previous matches. Two other early encounters of interest are:

- Azarenka v Lisicki

- Stosur v Goerges

In the MEN's China Open draw, Sam Querrey posted an upset over #8 seed Verdasco 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, and #4 seed Cilic was upset by wildcard Marius Copil 3-6, 7-6 (0), 6-4.

JOKER takes the court tomorrow against qualifier David Berrer, #3 Tsonga plays Denis Istomin, and #2 Ferrer plays Yen-Hsun Lu.

In Tokyo, MURRAY debuts against Monfils, and Stepanek plays Raonic in one of th better match-ups.
