Another Day, Another marathon

Venus, Ferrer Eliminated; Swiss lose doubles

August 01, 2012 | 09:57 PM

Today it was MEN'S DOUBLES: a 3rd set ended 2 games short of yesterday's 25-23 finish in the Tsonga-Raonic 3rd set.

Fifth seeds Berdych & Stepanek were upset by Brazilians Melo & Soares 6-1, 4-6, 24-22, setting a new Olympic record for set length in doubles and moving into the quarters v 2nd seeds Tsonga & LLodra. Though they played fewer games, their 3rd set and match took 11 minutes longer (at 191 minutes) than the singles marathon.

Shorter but also notable were two other doubles matches:

- Tipsarevic & Zimonjic (#3 seeds) defeated Nestor & Pospisil 6-4, 6-7 (5), 11-9

- Ferrer & Lopez won over Melzer & Peya.6-3, 3-6, 11-9 and face Cilic & Dodig (the pair of Ferrer & Lopez are the only remaining Spaniards who could medal in tennis)

There will be no gold for Switzerland in men's doubles: FED & Wawrinka were beaten in 3 sets by Erlich & Ram, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. The BRYANS will face the Israelis tomorrow (they won 6 and 6 over Davydenko & Youzhny).

The FRENCH can be happy to have two teams in the Quarters: Benneteau & Gasquet upset the 7th seeded Indian Bhupathi & Bopanna 6-3, 6-4.

WOMEN: Venus eliminated by Kerber, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5)

Sharapova was the only seed stretched to 3 sets, coming back 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 over Lisicki.

She faces CLIJSTERS in the featured quarter-final; Kim defeated Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4.

Kvitova and Kirilenko will play for the other semi-final berth in that half.

The top half pits Williams v Wozniacki and Azarenka v Kerber.

Arguably, though Clijsters, Kirilenko and Wozniacki have not had great years, this is the best women's quarterfinal line-up of any event this year, and could produce four major champions in the semis - which is more than the men can do here.

MEN: Ferrer Upset by Japanese star Nishikori

Four of the quarterfinalists needed 3 sets to advance:

- JOKER over Hewitt 4-6, 7-5, 6-1

- MURRAY over Baghdatis 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

- Del Potro over Simon 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

- Nishikori over FERRER 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 (plays Del Potro)

In the four other 4th round singles matches there were 5 deuce sets - no one advanced without at least one:

- FED won 7-5, 6-3 over Istomin (plays Isner)

- ISNER won 7-5, 7-6 over #7 Tipsarevic

- Almagro won 7-5, 6-3 over Darcis (plays Murray)

- Tsonga won 7-6, 6-4 over Lopez (plays Joker)

Tomorrow's featured singles are:

- Fed v Isner

- Joker v Tsonga
