Fed, Serena Set Record Earnings Milestones

Leaving Real Madrid for Red, Red Roma

May 14, 2012 | 09:19 AM

If RAFA had not suffered an early defeat in Madrid and left for home or the red clay of Roma, he might have celebrated a record 21st ATP 1000 level title yesterday by going to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to see Mallorca try to win a Europa League Spot and prevent Real Madrid from breaking the Liga's point scoring record. His home team was no more successful than he'd been in Madrid, losing 4-1, though I doubt they left complaining about the surface and vowing not to return unless it is changed or improved.

Rafa's rival FEDERER collected his 20th 1000 title (tying Rafa's record 20th won in Monte Carlo last month) along with $770,000 to push his career earnings to over $70,000,000. Roger left Madrid with Rafa's #2 ranking (see new ATP rankings for top 32 players Below).

SERENA's piece of the pie was enough to push her career earnings to over $35,000,000, $7M ahead of the all time #2 earner, Venus. The 30 year old winner also improved her ranking to #6 in the world, just behind Sam Stosur

(see new WTA rankings below).

Roger will return to defend his title, and Serena said if she didn't return, it wouldn't be because of the court surface, which she said was slippery, but not all that unusual for clay.

Turning back to watch Rome on red clay is an inferior viewing experience, without doubt. While building new clay surfaces this year hasn't worked out without major problems (indoors in Switzerland, as well as in Madrid), the top players are going to find their voices marginalized, again, on this one. Blue clay is in Madrid to stay, and it wouldn't surprise me to see other venues adopt it. It's play characteristics will be better by next year. Blue is also superior to green clay in terms of digital viewing - something they might think about in Houston for the US Clay...
