Madrid Men's Draw: #8 seed Isner gets unlucky

Draws Delpo in 3rd round

May 04, 2012 | 08:04 PM

When Andy Murray withdrew from Madrid with a bad back, #10 ranked John ISNER moved up to the #8 seed (Mardy Fish is not entered due to his mysterious auto-immune disease). Mother Luck deserted the lone American seed when he drew Del Potro as his 2nd match in the 3rd round after an opening match with either Cilic or Montanes, both of whom have been wining matches on clay this week in minor events. John is 0 - 3 versus Delpo, and has yet to win a set. Should he lose to Delpo here, the Argentine will probably take over his #10 ranking. If that weren't bad enough, John finds himself in Tsonga's quarter and in RAFA's half. Rafa also has a countryman in his quarter who's never beaten him (in 13 tries), Verdasco, although they've had 4 very close matches.

In the other half:

- JOKER has fellow Serb Tipsarevic in his quarter who'd not beaten him when he's been healthy, along with Simon and Lopez (a semi-finalist in Munich after beating Tomic)

- ROGER's first match will be the winner between Raonic and Nalbandian. Elsewhere in his quarter are Gasquet, Ferrer and Almagro.

The men's action begins on Sunday.

Play in the WOMEN'S tournament begins tomorrow.

Madrid marks the return of both VENUS and SERENA. Unseeded Venus has a 1st round turn-up before she'd face the fast rising German, #12 seed Angelique Kerber. She's in #1 Azarenka's quarter. Serena is seeded 9th but fins herself in a competitive bracket with #6 Wozniacki, and Julia Goerges. She's in #2 Maria's quarter. The #1 and 2 may have bigger worries in the quarters than the Williams - don't expect too much from their come-backs before, possibly, the summer.
