Mild Salsa in Miami

March 24, 2012 | 09:29 PM

Seeds ruled the day in both men's and women's draws.

The only male seed to lose was #15 Lopez, who lost to 24 year old Spaniard Albert Ramos (ranked 56). This was not a huge upset, as Ramos has already beaten 4 top 30 players this year: Monaco, Gasquet, Chela, and Verdasco.

On the women's side, the only win close to an upset was recorded by a seed, #23 Wickmayer, who beat Clijsters 6-4, 7-(5). This makes life a little easier for Serena ('I hate tennis [too] - make that I hate all sports') Williams.

Federer continued his role with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Ryan Harrison, and Joker made it 7-0 against Baghdatis, though not without some of the usual struggle (a 16 minute hold from 15-40 at 4-3 in the 2nd set): 6-4, 6-4. Fed will play Roddick on Monday and go for win #22 against Andy, who last beat Rog here in 2008 (Andy's last 1000 title was here in 2010).

In a battle of 6'6" servers, American Sam Querrey came up short against S. African Kevin Anderson, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3, losing 3 of 3 break points. Anderson will be a test for Fish on Monday.

Del Potro also had his difficulties with a big server, Ivo Karlovic, who never earned a break point and saved 5 of his own in a 6-4, 7-5 loss. His next opponent is no shrimp, 6'6" Marin Cilic, who has beaten Delpo 2 of the last 3 tims they played, including last August in Canada.

As for match-ups tomorrow in the other half, among the more interesting may be:

- Raonic v Murray

- Berdych v Dmitrov

- Dolgopolov v #9 Tipsarevic

- Simon v Melzer

For women's match-ups, Venus and Ana have stadium matches, but though either could be challenged, neither match seems particularly significant.

Sloane Stephens lost rather routinely to Sharapova 6-4, 6-2 today, leaving the Williams the only two American women in the draw.

ISNER and Tsonga seem to be on a collision course in the 4th round, with the winner likely to face Rafa in the quarters.

Should FISH beat Anderson (he should), he'll face a Spaniard in the 4th round (Verdasco or Almagro), either of whom could be a confidence building win for Mardy when he needs it. He's in Fed's quarter (Joker's half).
