American Women

March 24, 2012 | 11:11 AM

The Williams sisters are back in the neighborhood causing trouble again, at least in the early rounds! Venus knocked of #3 seed Kvitova in 3 sets, 6-0 in the 3rd (Key Bee virus?), and appears to be headed at least to a 4th round meeting with Ivanovic or Hantuchova. The top seed remaining in her quarter is #5 Radwanska.

Serena's benefit from a courtesy #10 seed was to land in a tough quarter, where she may face Stosur in the 4th round and Wozniacki in the quarters. That's if Vinci isn't trouble for her and if she can get by Clijsters who re-emerged as a real contender when she disposed of #14 seed Goerges 6-2, 7-5 (Kim has to get past #23 Wickmayer in the next round before a Serena encounter).

Of the younger gen of American women had mixed 2nd round results:

- Sloane Stephens was the lone winner, taking the 3rd set 7-5 over #30 seed Sara Errani.

Losers included:

- Madison Keys to #5 Radwanska 6-7, 6-2, 6-1

- Vania King to #15 Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 7-6

- Christina McHale to #29 seed Cetkovska 0-6, 7-5, 6-1

UPSETS to date in the early rounds:

- Mona Barthel pulled off an upset this time, beating recent upset victim #13 Jankovic 6-0, 6-3.
