BNP Paribas: the richest of the 1000's - on its way to being Major?

Comparative Earnings, ATP v WTA, Majors v ATP1000/WTA Premier Events

March 20, 2012 | 05:54 PM

The BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells) men's and women's winners and finalists got a huge pay increase this year, with - for a change - the men reaching parity with the women who had out-earned them last year by nearly $100K ($700,000 to about $615,000):

$1,000,000 went to Roger Federer and Vika Azarenka for winning this BNP

$ 500,000 went to finalists Isner and Sharapova

$ 200,000 to 2 semifinalist

$ 100,000 to 4 quarterfinalists

$ 43,520 to 4th round losers

$ 23,291 to 3rd round losers

$ 12,725 to 2nd round losers

$ 7,709 to 1st round losers

$ 2,296 to 2nd round qualifying losers

$ 1,175 to 1st round qualifying losers

Compare this to the Sony Ericsson Open (Miami) this week where the women's winner gets $712,000 and the man $659,775. Only the 1st and 2nd round losers earn roughly the same money at Miami.

Winners' Purse at other top tier events:

$616,500 Shanghai Rolex Masters

$597,010 BNP Paribas Masters (Paris)

$570,710 International BNL D'Italia (Rome)

IW owner Larry Ellison has set a goal to increase attendance to .5 million within 5 years, up from this year's record 370,000, more than the capacity of both Wimbledon and Roland Garros which have annual attendance of less than 500,000. There is a big jump for IW prize money to equal that offered by the 4 Majors, but with the vision that Larry Ellison has for IW, there is a little reason to suspect that he can't keep pressuring them from beneath and becoming, de facto, the West Coast Major that IW was originally conceived to be by it's founders.

Major Prize Money Awards to Winners (both men and women):

$2,300,000 Australia (2012)

$1,745,000 Wimbledon (2011)

$1,700,000 US Open (2011)

$1,580,000 Roland Garros (2012)
