500 ATP points at stake in Dubai and Acapulco

February 28, 2012 | 08:59 PM

Everyone but Rafa is warming in desert weather for Indian Wells and Miami, competing for real (Rafa's too busy with his parallel life as super model/pitchman).

DUBAI has the big guns: Joker, Roger, Andy, Delpo, Tsonga, Berdych and Fish (the only American in either draw)

The draw suggests seeds Joker and Andy meet in the semis, while Tsonga and Delpo may meet for the 2nd week in a row, this time in the quarters, for the right to meet Roger. Murray has a quarterfinal with Berdych, Federer with Fish.

The surface is one of the fastest on the tour, which may make for some interesting variations in the usual match-ups. Roger has won here four times, Joker three, and this may be a better opportunity for Tsonga and Fish than either IW or Miami will be. No wonder Rafa took a pass - this is not his schtick.

Delpo won his first event of 2012 last week in Marseilles, beating Tsonga and Llodra. The Dubai surface will not help him, however; his strokes are too big, and the fast speed helps others match his service weaponry.

ACAPULCO is headlined by Ferrer and Almagro, with Simon and Nishikori as 3rd and 4th seeds. With this crowd and no American (or Canadian) venturing south of the border, it's a good guess the surface is muy lento...

Raonic gathered some 200 points last week in Memphis as runner-up for a 2nd year in a row, losing to Melzer, who won hi first event since 2010.

It was a disappointing week for #1 seed Isner, who lost to unseeded Melzer in the quarters. Sam Querrey may have been encouraged by a quarterfinal result (he lost to Stepanek). Both Harrison and Sweeting lost in the 2nd round.
