Update from OZ (Day 1 Results; Day 2 action)

January 16, 2012 | 08:15 PM

The only American winner on the women's side was Christina McHale, who upset #24 seed Safarova 6-2, 6-4.

No other women's seed lost more than 6 games. Advancing were Clijsters, Wozniacki, Jankovic, Schiavone, Na Li and Azarenka.

On the men's side, American winners outnumbered losers on day 1:

- Donald Young notched a 5 set W over a German qualifier ranked 248th

- Sam Querrey, Isner and Fish are off to strong starts with straight set W's

In second day action:

- Ryan Harrison: plays #4 seed Andy Murray (look for this on ESPN2, LIVE tonight)

- Andy Roddick: plays #53 Robin Haase

- Jesse Levine: plays #26 seed Marc Granollers

- Michael Russell: plays #27 seed Chela

- Ryan Sweeting: plays #86 Bachinger

Major seeds in action include:

- Joker versus 30 year old Italian Paolo Lorenz (ranked 109)

- Ferrer versus Rul Machado from Portugal (

- Monfils versus Marinko Matosevic (an Australian wild card)

- Gasquet versus Seppi

On yesterday's main stage, even if you weren't Australian the match of the day was the 5 set come-back win by 19 year old Bernard TOMIC over #22 seed Verdasco 4-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. Playing with an admitted lack of fitness on a 90 degree+ day, he used his skills playing the score and picking his opportunities to undo an opponent who is too easily undone. Last year he upset the 31st seed Lopez on his way to a 3rd round loss to Nadal. Next up for him is Sam Querrey.

DOLGOPOLOV was taken to 5 sets, but showed his trade mark fearlessness (Baghdatisness?) by spotting his opponent 2 sets quickly before firing off enough winners to win with the loss of only 4 more games: 1-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. BAGHDATIS himself won more easily over Becker 6-1, 7-6, 6-2. LJUBICIC also needed 5 sets to beat Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4.

Other top men's seeds advancing more easily included:

- DEL POTRO: defeated Mannarino (2-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4)

- FEDERER: defeated Kudryavtsev (7-5, 6-2, 6-2)

- FISH: defeated Gilles Muller (6-4, 6-4, 6-2)

- BERDYCH: defeated Ramos (7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3)

- ANDERSON: defeated Nielsen (6-1, 6-2, 6-4)

- WAWRINKA: defeated Paire (6-1, 6-1, 7-5)

- ALMAGRO: defeated Kubot (6-1, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5)

- ISNER: defeated Mitchell (6-4, 6-4, 7-6)

- LOPEZ: defeated Mayer (7-6, 6-3, 7-6)

- NADAL: defeated Kuznetsov (6-4, 6-1, 6-1)

#25 seed Juan Monaco was upset by Kohlschreiber 6-0 in the 5th set.
