The Very Unusual Career of Mardy Fish vs Other top earners

January 10, 2012 | 06:04 PM

Mardy FISH: CAREER EARNINGS - $6.6 Million (in 12 full years on the tour), age 30

- Last year he earned over about $1.6 M in tournament prize money + a $70,000 bonus for winning the US Open Series and reaching the 4th round of the Open

- in his 9 years on the tour ranked in the top 100 he earned a little under $5 million, or about $500 K per year

His year end rankings tell the story of a man whose early career showed great potential, but who then stalled out and did not see the ranking he first reached as 21 year old again until he was 29:

8 2011 (4 months before he turned 30 he made the top 10 for the first time)

16 2010 (after a 6 year hiatus from the top 20, he got there again at age 29)

55 2009

24 2008

39 2007

47 2006

225 2005

37 2004

20 2003 (he broke into the top 20 at 22)

84 2002 (he was almost 21 when he broke into the top 100)

141 2001

325 2000

By contrast, David FERRER, who also turned pro in 2000 (at 18, a year younger than Fish) has CAREER EARNINGS of $12.6 Million, age 29.

His year end rankings tell of a similar start, reaching the milestone of the top 100 slightly later at age 22 and the top 20 at age 23, but then showing remarkable consistency and finishing each of the next 7 years in the top 20 with 3 top 10 finishes (2 at # 5).

For further contrast, the CAREER EARNINGS OF THE ACTIVE TOP 30 PLAYERS OTHER THAN FERRER WHO HAVE EARNED MORE THAN FISH: (all the players below have achieved higher year end rankings in their career than Mardy)
