Federer v Tsonga - Encore in DOHA!

January 05, 2012 | 08:07 PM

I hope these two haven't grown tired of battling each other after their 3 matches in the last 2 events of the season (2 at Barclays in London), among 8 they played in 2011 (all won by Fed except the heartbreaker in the Wimbledon quarters and an early round match in Montreal). They met in 2 finals (both won by Rog), 2 semis (also won by Rog) and 2 quarters (split). And they are playing tomorrow for the 2nd year in a row in the semis at Doha. On Saturday the winner will face the winner of Rafa and Monfils.

Only Rog lost a set in the quarters (against Seppi); Rafa beat Youzhny 4 and 4; Tsonga def. Ramos 2 and 1; and Monfils def. Troicki 2 and 3.

In the Brisbane men's event, 4th seed Dolgopolov will face 2nd seed Simon in the semis, while in the other quarters Murray faces Baghdatis and Istomin plays Tomic.

Finals are on Saturday. After this weekend, the top 4 will sit out until the Open in 2 weeks.

4th seed Serena withdrew from a 3rd round match with 15th seed Hantuchova, who will face 5th seed Clijsters in the semis. Kim lost a set to Ivanovic in the 2nd round and then defeated Benesova in two after the Czech had beaten top see Sam Stosur 6-4, 6-2. In the bottom half, Schiavone survived a match point to beat Jankovic and is in the semis facing unseeded Kanepi, who beat 2nd seed Petkovic 6-1, 7-6.

Heavytopspin's Jeff Sackmann spun some interesting data on Roger, contrasting his winning record since losing the #1 ranking with his stats as a #1. Bottom line, he's as dominant over the field as ever (more so than in '07) though he's losing the big 5 setters that made his career. Link to his site:
