Nadal season over? Joker in form again

Basel, Valencia results Thursday 11.3/.11

November 03, 2011 | 06:46 PM

Rafa announced today that he'd withdrawn from the Paris Masters next week - will he make it to London to finish his season? Signs point to YES. As noted in this dispatch on Yahoo:

Nadal didn't list an injury, nor did he give a real excuse. He basically just said, "I'm not going to play." You think he's taking any enjoyment -- the slightest bit -- in withdrawing and indirectly showing the ATP that the season is too long? I'm not suggesting this was a passive-aggressive move or that Nadal's motives aren't pure, just that, given his disdain for the length of the tennis calendar, he may be able to prove a slight point while getting some extra rest.

In Basel, Joker found his form today in his 2nd match, winning easily 6-1, 6-2 over Lukas Kubot.

Other Basel winners today were:

- Roddick defeated Stepanek, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and will face Federer in the quarters tomorrow.

- Nishikori defeated Seppi, 6-3, 7-6

- Kukushkin defeated Blake, 6-3, 6-4

- Mayer defeated Ljubicic, 6-3, 6-1

In Valencia, Sam Querrey notched an important victory over Tsonga, 7-5, 6-2, and will face Del Potro in tomorrow's quarterfinal (the Argentine defeated Anderson 6-4, 6-4).

Ferrero defeated Bogomolov 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, and Granollers defeated Cilic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5
