9 of 16 seeds out in Basel, Valencia 1st round

November 02, 2011 | 07:25 PM

All of the top ten players except for Nadal signed up to play this week in Spain or Switzerland, but 5 are out before the 2nd round, three in Basel by retirement or withdrawal (Murray, Fish and Tipsarevic); Berdych and Almagro played and lost. Given how long most have been out of action (6 weeks), this is anything but surprising. Only seven of the 16 seeds made it into the 2nd round.

The remaining fields include many non-seeds who have been in the top 10 previously:

Del Potro, Monfils, Wawrinka, Roddick, Blake, Ljubicic, Baghdatis, Ferrero and Davydenko

Other dangerous players also remain:

Cilic, Anderson, Granollers, Nishikori, Stepanek and Haase.

In Basel action today, Roddick won his first match in straight sets over Tommy Haas, 6-3, 6-4, and is on course to meet Federer in the quarters after a 2nd round match with Stepanek.

- Federer's won in 3 sets over Nieminen

- Murray withdrew due to a 'fluke' gluteal strain that had prevented him from practicing the day before

In Valencia, Del Potro, Ferrer, Monfils and Cilic moved on (Cilic beat Raonic 6-4, 6-4), while Bogomolov upset 8th seeded Lopez 7-6 in the 3rd.

Monfils and Tsonga are on course to meet in the semis. Ferrer has no seed left in his half.
