The Race to London, Istanbul

Asian Moves

September 30, 2011 | 09:27 PM

In a slow week for the men's tour with only 250 level events, there've been few results of importance to The Race:

- Simon (#10 in The Race to London) has reached the semis in Thailand (a 250 tournie) and has a chance now to win points beyond the 90 he's collected so far

- Tipsarevic (#13 in The Race) reached the semis in Malaysia with a win over Davydenko

- Almagro, #11 in The Race, lost to Nishikori in the quarters of Malaysia

- Murray, who's qualified for London with the other top 4, needs the points only to try to pass Federer in the rankings; he reached the semis in Thailand with a solid win over #76 Grigor Dmitrov (age 20), whose 60 spot jump in ranking since last October makes him one of the biggest young movers of the year to join the top 100.

Although all the top women were playing an important event in Tokyo, the biggest news of the week was #2 seed Sharapova turning her ankle early during her re-match with Wimbledon champ #5 seed Kvitova, and retiring. Kvitova, who's won little since the big one, promptly lost in the next round (the semis) to #4 seed Zvonareva, 6-4, 6-4. In the final, Vera will face #9 Radwanska, who upset #3 seed Azarenka in 3 sets. #1 seed Wozniacki lost in the first round.
