Tsonga moving toward top 7 finish; #8: Delpo? Simon?

Last Man Standing?

September 25, 2011 | 04:35 PM

In terms of results that could affect rankings this week, nothing more meaningful could have happened than Jo Willy winning a 250, which is what he did by beating Ljubicic in a close 3 setter.

For Jo, currently ranked #10 but #7 in the Race standings to qualify for the year end Masters in London, the 250 points were enough to put him 5 points ahead of Mardy Fish at #6 and 300 points ahead of #8 Berdych. With #9 Soderling still injured, the nearest contenders for a top 8 finish are #10 Simon, who gained 655 points last year after the Open, #11 Amalgro (he only accumulated 190 points after the Open last year), and #11 Del Potro.

Delpo is 450 points behind #8 Berdych in the Race, which could be a lot to overcome if Berdych were healthy - but the Czech was playing with injuries late in the summer.

With energy from his role in putting Argentina in the Davis Cup finals, Delpo might have a good enough showing this fall to end up #8 and take on an important role in London, setting up his Davis Cup final against Rafa.

Last man standing... Don't bet against Rafa in Spain, but in London, indoors on a fast court, Delpo would be as exciting as anyone except defending champion Federer.
