Who gets Serena first?

US Open Draw highlights

August 25, 2011 | 04:29 PM

WOMEN's Draw

AZARENKA, the #4 seed, is the lucky one who gets SW in the 3rd round. Next up, by seeding, would be Ivanovic in the 4th round. Their quarter is the Schiavone-Jankovic quarter, in the Wozniacki-Li Na

half, which also includes Petkovic (playing with a knee injury).

The other half includes a quarter with #4 seed SHARAPOVA and #5 seed Kvitova. Venus is in the 4th quarter in the 'Zvonareva bracket with Lisicki and Cibulkova. Bartoli (#8) is the other highest seed.

MEN's draw

JOKER's first encounter with a seed may be #31 Ivan Dodig, who upset Rafa in Montreal, if the Croat gets by Davydenko in the 1st round. Gasquet (#13) would be next in the 4th round, unless the frenchman gets dropped earlier - he has one of the tougher draws, starting with #41 Stakhovsky, before Karlovic or Gonzalez, and then #22 Dolgopolov. This is all before Joker might face #9 Berdych or #7 Monfils.

FEDERER is in JOKER's half - once again (for the umpteenth time), along with #8 seed FISH and #11 seed Tsonga. Rog may have a 2nd round with Thomaz Bellucci and a 3rd round with either #27 Cilic or Bernard Tomic. Ryan Harrison drew Cilic in the 1st round. The other first round which may produce a close one in this part of the draw is #23 seed Stepanek v #47 Kohlschreiber. This quarter will diminish Roger's chance of reaching another semi-final.

MURRAY's quarter has the interest of #18 Del Potro, who shares a bracket with #12 Simon and #28 Isner in #6 Soderling's bracket. Andy has #25 Lopez and #14 Wawrinka in his bracket.

NADAL's quarter is the lightest, by far, of threats to a top seed. Seeds Ljubicic (#30), Melzer (#17) and Youzhny (#16). While Rafa is 4-4 with Youzhny on hard courts and lost to both Ljubicic and Melzer last year, none of these has won a match on hard courts yet this summer. Favorites to reach the 4th round to meet Rafa are fellow Spaniards #5 Ferrer and #10 Almagro, both of whom are owned by a healthy Rafa. Roddick (#21) and Mayer (#26) round out this quarter in the Almagro-Ferrer brackets, respectively, presenting no real threat.
