Serena, Fish and Baker move on; Andy drops match to Ferrer

June 30, 2012
Mardy Fish of the US reaches the fourth round of Wimbledon by defeating David Goffin of Belgium 63 76(6) 76(6). Last year Fish reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, his best showing at the premier grass court tournament.

Serena survived the wind and a determined bid by Zheng Jie 67(5) 62 97. Serena's next opponent is the unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. In her last match she won all 24 points in the first set....a "golden set" in defetaing the runner-up at the French Open, Sara Errani 60 64. According to the International Tennis Federation, it is the first golden set by a woman in the Open era.

The pleasant surprise for the U.S. is the play of Brian Baker. He has reached the 4th round of Wimbledon with a victory over Benoit Oaire of France 64 46 61 63. The rebirth of Baker's career comes after a 6 year absence brought on by injuries and multile surgeries.

Andy Roddick, after a spectacular start, sputtered to lose to David Ferrer. Looking younger than his 29 years Roddick took the first set 62 and appeared unstoppable, but Ferrer, the "digger" came back to win the second set in a tie break 76(8). In the final two sets Ferrer won 64 and 63, Roddick, who is known as a "never give up" player appeared to have some difficulties with the right side of his rib cage.
