Sidney Wood and his spot in Wimbledon History
|
November 01, 2011 Sidney Wood and his spot in Wimbledon History
Sidney has reserved his spot in tennis history when in 1931 he won the singles title at the Wimbledon Championships in a "walkover".
Sidney was scheduled to play against fellow American Frank Shields in the final. Shields had injured his ankle in a semi-final match.
The USA Davis Cup Team, with both Shields and Wood as members, was scheduled to play a Tie just days after the Wimbledon Final, and the USA Davis Cup Captain urged Shields to rest his injury to speed its healing.
Shields retired from the Wimbledon Final to better prepare for the Davis Cup Tie.
Consequently, Sidney Wood won in a walkover and became the only uncontested winner of a Wimbledon Final.
Can you imagine a player in the 21st Century repeating that historic event.
Sidney Wood born on this day (November 1, 1911).
