Djokovic Likely Out for Four Weeks with Rib Injury

September 20, 2011
The Serbian newspaper Večernje novosti reports that World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is likely to miss about four weeks because of a tear to his intercostal muscle, the injury that caused Djokovic to collapse during his Davis Cup match against Juan Martin Del Potro.

The intercostal muscles are located between the ribs. An intercostal muscle tear can cause sharp, stabbing pains from breathing. It can be aggravated by twisting or bending the torso.

Djokovic said the injury was present throughout his US Open run. He received treatment for it during the final against Rafael Nadal, but managed to make it through the final set, despite being in visible pain.

Djokovic's physio, Miljana Amanović, reportedly said that Djokovic will likely miss the tournament in Beijing, and is questionable for Shanghai.
