Tsonga overwhelms Federer...again.

August 12, 2011
An inspired Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ended Roger Federer's brief Canadian run by ousting him in three sets (7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1) in the third round of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

Tsonga, who had already defeated Federer in Montréal two years ago and at Wimbledon this summer, was more than remarkable. He was, quite simply, brilliant.

The first set ended in a decisive game that was won by the Frenchman. Federer then regained his means in the second set, breaking Tsonga in the third game and eventually taking the set.

In the third, the world no. 3 was unable to match Tsonga's incredible shots. With dominant serves and quick and stable groundstrokes, Tsonga breezed through to the great surprise of fans at Uniprix Stadium.

In the quarters on Friday, the 13th seed will go head-to-head with Nicolas Almagro of Spain, who came back after being broken in the first set to defeat Richard Gasquet (10) of France (7-6 (5), 6-3).

In the other quarterfinal matches, Novak Djokovic (1) will face GaŽl Monfils (6), Mardy Fish (6) will meet Stanislas Wawrinka (14) and Tomas Berdych (7) will be up against Janko Tipsarevic.
