5th "Little Mo" International Open at IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy Sponsored by Babolat

December 05, 2011
5th "Little Mo" International Open at IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy sponsored by Babolat and presented by The Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation

The "Little Mo" Internationals is the only worldwide tournament for boys and girls 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 years of age and is the culmination of the yearlong "Little Mo" circuit.

The "Little Mo" tournaments are designed to be fun and provide good competition for the younger player at the sectional, regional, national, and international level. The players in the "Little Mo" Internationals are the youngest and brightest stars in junior tennis and the event is the premier challenge for youngsters to compete against others who are the same age from around the world. We are glad to welcome 250 players from 44 different nations to the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy this week.

The "Little Mo" tournament began in Texas more than thirty years ago and due to its popularity, the event expanded to a national level in1998 with the formation of the "Road to the 'Little Mo' Nationals." This nationwide, year-long circuit of fun, competitive tournaments culminates in a United States national champion being crowned in each age division. More than 1,500 players participate annually in the "Road to the 'Little Mo' Nationals".

Our goal for the "Little Mo" International Open is for players to develop new friendships with players from other countries, provide outstanding competition, learn good sportsmanship and most of all, have fun. There will be no ranking points given in order to avoid putting pressure on players at this young age. The winner of each age division will be crowned "Little Mo" International champion.

The festivities will begin on Friday afternoon at IMG Academies with legendary coach Nick Bollettieri hosting a "complimentary" clinic for all "Little Mo" players from 2:00 - 3:30 pm. The Opening Ceremony and Parade of Nations will begin at 4:00 pm. Cindy Brinker Simmons, Maureen Connolly's daughter, will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony.

Matches will begin Saturday, December 10 and continue through Wednesday, December 14. Players will be competing throughout the weekend playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Many champions, including well known player Andy Roddick, have come through the "Little Mo" program in its thirty year-history. Roddick won the "Little Mo" event in 1992 at 10 years of age. At that time, he lived in Austin, Texas and the event was for Texas players only. Roddick said, "The 'Little Mo' was my first big win!" He continues to be very supportive of the "Little Mo." Other well known players who are former champions are Ryan Harrison and Donald Young. Many former players have received full college scholarships and are stars on their college teams.

The "Little Mo" tournaments are sponsored by the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation in memory of Maureen Connolly, who was known as "Little Mo." In 1953, she was the first woman to win the Grand Slam - winning all four major tournaments (Wimbledon, U.S. Open, French Open, and Australian Open) in the same year.

The MCB Tennis Foundation was founded in 1968 by Maureen "Little Mo" Connolly Brinker and her good friend, Nancy Jeffett. The foundation has promoted junior tennis development for over forty years and continues to benefit countless numbers of boys and girls throughout the United States and the world.
